This collection shows all red dot mounts from the point of view of the red dot. Use it if you already own a red dot and want to find a mount for it. Every mount has two sides: the bottom fits your firearm, the top fits the footprint of your red dot.
What a footprint is
The footprint is the screw pattern and base shape of a red dot. It decides which mount the red dot fits. Two red dots with the same footprint fit the same mount, even if they come from different makers.
Common footprints on mounts
-
Shield RMSc and Trijicon RMR: the two most common footprints on mounts.
-
Leupold DPP and Docter: often combined on one mount with RMSc.
-
C-More RTS: often combined with RMR.
-
Holosun K-series: on EGW and Outer Impact type S mounts.
-
Aimpoint Acro, Holosun 509T and Toni System: on selected mounts.
Which red dots have which footprint
The red dot maker names the footprint in the specifications. Some examples from this store:
If the specifications do not name a footprint, check the manual or the website of the red dot maker.
One footprint or several
More than half of the mounts take three footprints. Their title shows a type letter and the three footprints in brackets. The other mounts take one footprint only, named after the word "footprint" in the title. A mount for several footprints is useful if you may change your red dot later. A mount for one footprint is the choice when the maker offers your model only in this version.
Type letters on mounts
Many mounts fit several footprints. Their titles show a type letter and a list in brackets:
- Toni System type A: Shield RMSc, Leupold DPP and Docter.
- Toni System type B: Trijicon RMR and C-More RTS.
- EGW and Outer Impact type S: Shield RMSc, Leupold DPP and Holosun K-series.
- Outer Impact type C: Trijicon RMR, C-More RTS and Docter.
Other letters exist, for example type H or L on some Toni System mounts. Always read the list in the brackets.
Mount makers
-
Toni System (Italy): aluminium mounts with type letters, the largest group in this collection. Toni System also makes frame mounts for the Beretta 92X Performance and the Glock gen 4.
-
EGW (USA): aluminium mounts, mostly for one footprint or type S. EGW also makes universal mounts for shotguns and rifles with a .670" radius receiver.
-
Outer Impact (USA): aluminium mounts in type C and type S.
-
Shield Sights (United Kingdom): mounts and Picatinny mounts for the RMSc footprint.
-
Zendl and KMR (Czech Republic) and Contessa (Italy): steel mounts. Contessa makes Picatinny mounts with a QD mechanism.
-
Vector Optics, Holosun and Olight: Picatinny mounts, some with a raiser.
Mounts for pistols and mounts for rails
Most mounts are made for a specific pistol. They replace the rear sight or sit on the frame. Picatinny mounts are different. They fit any Picatinny rail, so you can use them on rifles and shotguns. A raiser lifts the red dot higher. On a rifle this brings it up to the line of your eye. The raisers in this collection are listed with 19, 21, 28 or 32 mm in the title.
The collection also contains footprint adapters and screws, because they solve footprint problems.
Step by step
- Find the footprint of your red dot.
- Find the collection for your firearm brand and model.
- Choose a mount whose title names your footprint.
If no mount for your model takes your footprint, a footprint adapter may help. See Footprint adapters. For mounts sorted by firearm brand, see Red dot mounts.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install a red dot mount at home?
Yes, if you have a sight pusher or a punch. The mount goes into the rear sight dovetail in place of the rear sight. No milling is needed. See Installation tools.
Does a type A mount fit a Trijicon RMR?
No. Toni System type A takes Shield RMSc, Leupold DPP and Docter. For a Trijicon RMR choose type B, type C or a mount with Trijicon RMR in its title.
Can I use a pistol red dot on my rifle?
Yes, with a Picatinny mount for its footprint. Choose a mount with a raiser if the red dot sits too low for your eye.
